Pete Buttigieg - Christian?
(continued from
Pete Buttigieg Beliefs)
Is Pete Buttigieg a Christian, and if so, what type of Christian is he?
Pete Buttigieg was questioned about his claimed
Christianity on MSMBC's Morning Joe
on September 5, 2019 when host Joe Scarborough asked him,
"I'm wondering if you associate yourself with the words of Barack Obama as we talk about faith and God. I mean,
Barack Obama came
out -
noted Muslim, as many of his political enemies said - and he said, 'I have
come to know Jesus Christ personally as my Lord and personal Savior.' Is that
your feeling. Do you associate yourself with those words?"
Pete Buttigieg gave a
"Yes but" answer in which he said
that he never had a
"personal encounter with God," he
"actually came to faith more through... [his own]
personal humility," he hadn't
"found the
answer," and then blamed and laid a false accusation against the
Scripture:
"Yes but maybe that means different things to
different people because a lot of people feel that they had a kind of 'Road to
Damascus' personal encounter with God. For me, just personally, I actually
came to the faith more through an appreciation of mystery and a personal
humility about the limits to which this part of me (pointing to his head) could
get than believing that I had found the answer. I struggle with a lot of
doubt and a lot of ambiguity that is there, that is there in Scripture as that
is there in life."
Not impressed with Buttigieg's answer, Joe Scarborough pressed,
"But is it a feel-good thing though for you or is Jesus
Christ your
Lord and Savior: your personal Savior?"
This time, Pete Buttigieg didn't even start with "Yes." Instead, he began with a
"So, again, that means different things for
different people,” and then pivoted into a meandering diversion about
New
Testament translations before settling on
"presence," which he said
"is the way for
salvation," before conceding,
"I don't know
how well aligned that is with how others view their encounter, with Christian
faith."
Therefore, Pete Buttigieg admitted that he doesn't know if
what he
believes about his salvation is aligned with the
"Christian faith." Watch this video clip:
