Rick Santorum - Catholic

Then, is Rick Santorum Catholic and Christian?
Let's start with whether Rick Santorum sees himself as Catholic and Christian or just Catholic.
In 2008, Rick Santorum clearly distinguished between Roman Catholicism and Christianity:
"Once the colleges fell and those who were being
educated in our institutions, the next was the church. Now you’d say, "Wait, the
Catholic Church?" No. We all know that this country was founded on a
Judeo-Christian ethic but the Judeo-Christian ethic was a Protestant
Judeo-Christian ethic. Sure the Catholics had some influence, but this was a
Protestant country and the Protestant ethic, mainstream, mainline Protestantism
- and of course we look at the shape of mainline Protestantism in this country,
and it is in shambles - it is gone from the world of Christianity as I see it."
(Rick Santorum, August 2008, Ave Maria University)
What is "the world of Christianity" as Rick Santorum sees it?
It is his
"Catholic faith" that he and his wife came to during their phase of
delving into Catholic sermons and studies:
"And I'll never forget, it was November of 1995, a year into doing this, a year
of just throwing myself, and Karen was the same way. We were just both just alive with this idea of the
true Catholic faith and be motivated by it."
(Rick Santorum, August 2008, Ave Maria University)
Is he right about Protestantism and Catholicism?
When today's mainline Protestantism is contrasted against the Bible,
"shambles" isn't far from the truth. Led by
false preachers who preach health
and prosperity false gospel, psychology and other unbiblical doctrines, many mainline Protestant
denominations and churches are due for another Reformation.
But even further from the truth of the Bible is
Roman Catholicism, whose
wayward historical fruits, including
Indulgences (allowing
people to pay money to indulge in their sins),
Inquisition (torture and murder of non-Catholics), pedophilia,
idolatry of Mary, dead "saints" and Popes,
transubstantiation, etc., fundamentally
contradict the Bible, which records Jesus' warning:
"Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s
clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their
fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? Even so,
every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree
cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit."
(Matthew 7:15-18)
