"Things are getting better. Why do you say America
five trends indicate America is in a long-term social,
economic, moral and spiritual decline.
Evidence #1 of America in Decline - Poverty
In the 1970s, about 4 million Americans were on food stamps. Today, that figure
is 47.8 million, representing a 1,200% increase. According to the US Census Bureau,
43.5 million Americans now live in "poverty," while 146 million Americans -
almost half of the country - are either "poor" or "low income."
Evidence #2 of America in Decline - Suffering Children
From 1960 to 2013, the proportion of American children born out of wedlock
rose almost 800%, from 5.3% to 40.6% of all children. In 2013, 65% of all children born to 20-24
year old American women and over 90% of all children born to American teenagers
were born out of wedlock. Children born out wedlock are more likely to end up
poor, under-educated and in prison than those born to married parents.
Evidence #3 of America in Decline - Debt
In 1980, America's national debt was about $2 trillion. Today, it exceeds $18
trillion, representing in excess of a 900% increase.
When unfunded Medicare, Medicaid,
Social Security and other obligations are also included, America's total debt obligation
exceeds $130 trillion, which is more than 3 times
the combined debt of the rest of the world and over 7 times larger than America's
GDP of $17.8 trillion. Every American man, woman and child owes over $400,000 of
Evidence #4 of America in Decline - Addictions
In the 11 years from 2002 and 2013, the proportion of Americans over 12 years of
age who reported using illicit drugs within the past 30 days tripled from 8.3%
to 24.3%. Including those who are addicted
to alcohol and prescription drugs, well over half of all Americans are addicted to drugs and/or alcohol
Evidence #5 of America in Decline - Criminals
From 1980 to 2010, the number of Americans incarcerated in
prisons and jails rose over 400%, from 0.55 million to 2.3 million, while the US
population rose 37%, from 227 million to 310 million.
In other words, the number of Americans in prisons and jails rose more than 10
times faster than the population growth of America, which accounts for 4.4% of
the world's population but holds 24% of the world's prison population
today. One in
eleven American men are ex-convicts who have served time in federal prison.
Why is America in decline, and who can reverse
Throughout history, God blessed His people economically and socially when they
obeyed Him under a godly leader. When they turned away from Him under an ungodly
leader, God withdrew the prosperity and security that are His to give or to take away.
Four centuries ago, God led a boatload of people leave the comforts of Europe to
worship Him biblically in a new land and blessed their descendents into a mighty
nation. At the height of our prosperity, we turned away from God,
who is withdrawing the prosperity and security that always were and are His.
Israel was in a similar situation after the prosperity of Solomon’s
reign when it turned away from God and ignored repeated warnings to turn back.
God eventually destroyed Israel and sent its people into exile, not out of hate
but out of love because they wouldn’t have turned back to Him - whom they needed
more than prosperity or even freedom - without the exile.
But a destructive outcome doesn't have to be. The Bible also speaks of Nineveh,
a great power in its day that like Israel was about to be destroyed. But unlike
Israel, the Ninevites heeded
God's warning and led by its
leader, humbled themselves before
God in time.
The faith of our president matters because for America to be spared as well, we need to
humble ourselves before the
God of Justice as a
nation, seek His forgiveness and cry out to Him for His help.
