lauds Palin VP choice, raises McCain's candidacy rating
Besides appealing to Christian and women voters, John McCain's choice of Sarah Palin
as running mate underscores his maverick credentials, displays seriousness about
reform, and frames the two names on the "Obama-Biden" ticket as being out of order.
Sarah Palin and
Barack Obama are both young, Washington
outsiders who rose from working class roots to accomplish much in their meteoric careers. While Oama's
accomplishments are better known today, Palin
's turn out to be more
robust.
Obama is a first term U.S. Senator, of which there are 100, but has been out
campaigning for the last two years. During that time Palin, a first term
Governor, of which there are 55, actually has been working at her job gaining
executive experience.
Obama made his name working with Chicago's poor, helping them navigate the
system. Palin made her name changing the system, rooting out corruption and
cronyism as Mayor, Ethics Commissioner and Governor. Obama is a community
organizer. Palin is a
Reformer.
But both lack foreign policy experience and would be hard pressed as
the commander-in-chief today. And herein lies the genius of McCain's pick. By picking a
running mate whose strengths and weaknesses directly compare with Obama
's and
who isn't ready to be the commander-in- chief, McCain has framed Obama as someone
at best qualified for the Vice Presidency.
Barack Obama beat
Hillary Clinton not
because he was more qualified but because he got the message right. That America
wants change, however, is no longer news. The question now is, "Who is more
qualified and committed to changing Washington?"
Obama had the chance to choose a formidable former foe who is a relative
outsider and thereby burnish his claim to being that change agent. Instead, he
chose the ultimate insider, a white male
Senator who has been in Washington since
Obama was 11 years old.
If choices speak louder than words, then
John McCain can now claim that he is the more committed and qualified agent
of change, as well as a champion of women's causes.
Much campaigning remains but seldom have so many political birds been felled
with one stone, and McCain
deserves credit for the throw, as well as his
Judgment and sensitivity to
True Christian causes.
Our rating of John McCain's candidacy for President is raised to
B- from the
Previous Score.
