Cindy McCain was born Cindy Hensley to Marguerite and James Hensley, a large beer distributor in Arizona. Cindy was raised Christian, earned a Masters in education from University of Southern California and returned to Phoenix to become a teacher.

Cindy met the much older John McCain in 1979 at a party in Hawaii (To narrow their age gap, John McCain initially understated his by 4 years while Cindy overstated hers by 4 years). John McCain, at the time estranged from his wife, divorced in 1980 and married Cindy a month later.

Cindy McCain's connections helped launch John McCain's political career in Arizona and her considerable personal fortune helped finance his first Congressional campaign.

Cindy helped John as well in the 2008 Presidential Election against Barack Obama. To start, to help take the spotlight off John McCain's age, Cindy, a statuesque blonde with a colorful fashion sense, usually stood close enough to him during his campaign speeches so that the audiences can watch her while listening to him, especially until Sarah Palin arrived.

Driven by her faith, Cindy has led over fifty missions overseas for a children's medical missions group she founded and also serves with cleft palette remedy and land mine removal charities.
