"Why would a Christian president be better than a
good non-Christian president?"
In the depth of the 2008 debt crisis, America elected as President a
man who preached a message of
"Hope" in our ability to
meet our challenges:
"Yes We Can".
Four years later, could we? Have we met our debt, housing, energy, military,
social and
other challenges?
The facts resoundingly declare,
"No We Couldn't", and why not? Is it because
President Barack Obama and the Congress didn't try hard enough?
They did, to the tune of increasing
America's national debt
by 60% in 4 years.
We couldn't because
our problems have
grown far bigger than we can handle. Consider
just one set of numbers as an example.
Last year, our federal government revenues totaled $2.2 trillion. 78% or $1.7
trillion of that sum was mandatorily spent on Social
Security (32%, $701 billion), Medicare & Medicaid (37%, $793 billion), and our
national debt's
interest (9%, $197 billion) payments. Another
$689 billion, equal to 32% of the total revenues, was spent on defense.
In other words, mandatory and defense expenses totaled $2.4 trillion and
exceeded total federal revenues of $2.2 trillion. To cover the difference, as
well as to pay for all other 2010 expenses, our federal government
issued $1.3 trillion worth of IOUs last year alone, equal to 60% of its annual revenues,
raising our national debt to $15 trillion.
As massive as it is,
America's national debt of $15 trillion is just
the tip of the iceberg. Add in unfunded Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and
the like, and the present value of the amount owed by our federal government exceeds
$110 trillion, which is 50 times higher than the current annual federal revenues
and 7.5 times higher than America's GDP of $14.5 trillion.
In other words, our government is broke to the tune of owing 50 times more money
than income, and America is broke to the tune of owing 7.5 times more money than
the size of our economy.
These numbers are so staggering that even full employment and a rebound in the housing market will not change the picture. Every
2012 presidential candidate
knows this and has voiced the need to fix the problem, but no one has presented a
solution because there isn't one.
Can anyone solve our problems?
Throughout history, God blessed His people economically,
militarily and socially when they turned toward Him under a godly national
leader. And when they turned away from Him under an ungodly
leader, God withdrew the prosperity and security that are His to give or to take away.
Four centuries ago, God saw a boatload of people leave the comforts of Europe to
worship Him biblically in a new land, and blessed their descendents into a mighty
nation. At the height of our prosperity, however, we turned away from God, who
is withdrawing His prosperity and security.
In seeking a Christ
ian Presi
dent, we are not seeking someone who can save our
nation; we are seeking someone whose election will represent America's act of
contrition before the
Lord and a cry for His help.
That someone will know and have an active relationship with
Jesus of the
Bible, and campaign the way he or she should lead the nation: trusting and
focusing on
Jesus, who is sovereign over election results, instead of political
'wisdom'.
That someone will not be a "leader" whose desire and duty to
testify about his or her
Savior is
quenched by political fears, and certainly not someone who blasphemously
believes that Jesus, our perfectly holy God, is the older
brother of Satan.

2012 Presidential candidates
